Make Your Own Ornament Garland for the Holidays

Handmade touches make the holidays so cozy and festive. Many of us have plenty of ornaments that never make their way to the tree but are still loved. I like to find new ways to showcase them such as on this garland. The best part about this project is that no glue gun is required, and you can pick so many beautiful ribbons. This year I went for a spruce green velvet main ribbon and a cheerful plaid for the accent, but you can customize all the colors and patterns to match your holiday style. With the champagne glass balls, this one glows during dinnertime – especially in candlelight.

Gather Your Supplies

As mentioned, you will not find glue or a hot glue gun on this list! Spend some time thinking about the ribbons that will go best with your ornaments. You can pick all one ornament shape as pictured or alternate for so many festive looks.

  • Velvet Ribbon: Measure length of hanging area then add 1 ½ to 2 feet for swag and tying end loops
  • Secondary Ribbon Pattern/Color: About 4 ½ inches per ornament
  • Ornaments: Plan for 1 ornament about every 3 ½ inches

Tie End Loops on the Main Ribbon

The simplest loops work really well for garland and allow you to hang it in a variety of ways. If you know you won’t need a loop, tie a very simple knot just to give a little flourish to the end of the ribbon itself.

For the pictured garland, make a simple loop then pull the end through and repeat on the other end. Now it’s even easier to space out your ornaments as you have definite end points.

Tie Ornaments to Velvet Ribbon

Cut multiple 4 ½ inch lengths of secondary ribbon. You will use these to tie each ornament to the main garland. The top loop of the ornament is the perfect spot through which to run your ribbon.

For extra assurance that my ornaments will stay in place, I like to double knot them.

Swag Your Garland Someplace Lovely

I love how this garland brings festivity wherever it’s displayed. The champagne glass balls are glowy, and the classic simplicity of the spruce green ribbon makes me feel cozy well into the evening.

While I love to hang this garland on its own, it would be gorgeous alongside winter greenery on a mantel or even a simple Nordic style Christmas tree. You could even reverse the colors and opt for joyful red ornaments on a neutral ribbon. The possibilities are endless and all quite beautiful!
