The Beauty of Putting Things Away
On Easter Monday, after flowing conversations and plenty of overflowing plates, I set about the task of putting things away – my favorite blue faceted glasses, drink pitchers, serving plates, and other pieces. It struck me just how much I love the day after a celebration when I have time to feel the spirit of the gathering again. I’ll recall witty comments, sweet little moments, and the love poured into each other as we enjoyed so many delicious dishes.
There is a joy in putting things away. When I host holidays, so much care goes into each choice. From the menu to the flowers, I love offering the foundation for joyful moments. The next morning, even the objects on the table seem to hold a bit more significance. They go back to their spots enlivened with the joy we shared.
Whether or not you entertain this spring, there are plenty of moments when we put things away like this – the picnic blanket we carried to the park, the flowerpot that held summer’s best blooms. Beyond items, we put away memories and associated feelings in a lovely bank from which we can draw to feel a bit better or simply to stoke our happiness.
As you set the table for evening dinner or bring out the tools that allow you to garden peacefully in silence, may they remind you of the feelings that fill our days. I hope that many of yours will be joyful this season.
